Operating an electric forklift at elevated heights introduces unique stability challenges. As the mast lifts, the center of gravity shifts upward, increasing the risk of tipping or falling loads. To minimize these risks, operators must adhere to several fundamental safety practices.
First, always verify the load’s weight and ensure it is within the forklift’s rated capacity at the given lift height. High lifts reduce the safe load limit due to leverage changes. Position the load as close to the mast as possible and tilt the carriage slightly backward to stabilize the center of gravity. Never exceed the maximum lift height specified for the model.
Second, control your speed. Sudden acceleration, sharp turns, or abrupt stops at height can destabilize the forklift. Travel with the load low when moving, and only raise to required height at the destination. When lifting or lowering, do so smoothly and avoid jerky movements.
Third, inspect the work surface. Uneven, slippery, or soft ground amplifies instability risks at high lifts. Ensure the floor is level and free of debris. Use caution on ramps or inclines – always drive straight, not diagonally, and keep the load uphill when possible.
Fourth, secure the load properly. Use straps, shrink wrap, or pallet clips to prevent shifting. Stacked items must be interlocked and evenly distributed. Avoid overhanging loads that catch on racks or overhead structures.
Fifth, maintain clear visibility. If the load blocks forward view, travel in reverse or use a spotter. Install mirrors or cameras if needed. Never raise the load while driving.
Sixth, commit to regular maintenance. Check hydraulic hoses, chains, tires, and mast alignment before each shift. Faulty components can cause sudden drops or tilts. Keep the forklift’s operator manual accessible.
Finally, ensure all operators are thoroughly trained on high-lift procedures. Simulation drills and refresher courses help build muscle memory for emergency responses.
