How a Forklift BMS Protects the Battery Pack(圖1)

The battery pack is the core power source of modern electric forklifts, and the Battery Management System, commonly referred to as BMS, acts as the most critical guard unit to maintain the stable, safe and long-term operation of the whole battery system. A qualified forklift BMS works through multiple coordinated monitoring and control mechanisms to realize all-round protection of the battery pack, without interfering with the normal power output of the forklift under regular working conditions.

First of all, the BMS carries out full-range overcharge and over-discharge protection. It collects the voltage data of each single cell inside the battery pack in real time, and will cut off the charging loop automatically when the cell voltage reaches the pre-set upper safety threshold during charging, to avoid the irreversible damage to the cell material caused by continuous overcharging. When the forklift is in heavy load discharging state, the BMS will send out low power reminder to the operator when the cell voltage drops to the lower limit, and cut off the power output properly to prevent deep over-discharge that will reduce the cell cycle life.

The second core protection function is overcurrent protection. The BMS monitors the charging and discharging current of the whole loop all the time. When the instant current exceeds the safety limit due to frequent start and stop of the heavy load forklift or abnormal operation, the system will limit the current output in a very short time, to avoid excessive current from causing overheating or internal structure damage of the cells.

Temperature protection is also an indispensable part of the BMS protection system. Multiple temperature sensors are arranged at key positions of the battery pack, to collect the working temperature data of cells and modules continuously. When the temperature is lower than the applicable working range, the BMS will start the pre-heating function to ensure the forklift can be started normally in low temperature environment. When the working temperature is too high, the system will link the heat dissipation structure to cool down the battery pack. Once the temperature reaches the dangerous threshold, the BMS will cut off the power loop immediately to avoid potential safety risks.

Besides, the BMS also realizes cell balance management, to narrow the voltage difference between different single cells, keep the consistency of the whole battery pack, and avoid the premature attenuation of individual cells affecting the overall service life.
